WHAT IS THE SUMMER SOLSTICE?

The Summer Solstice is the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Occurring around June 20–21, it marks the moment when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky and the Earth receives its greatest amount of daylight.

The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning "sun stands still." Around this time, the Sun appears to pause in its movement before beginning its gradual journey southward. Though summer is just beginning, the wheel has already started to turn, and the days will slowly begin to shorten.

Astronomically, the Summer Solstice occurs because the Earth's axis is tilted toward the Sun. At this point in the year, the Northern Hemisphere is receiving the most direct sunlight, creating the longest period of daylight and marking the official beginning of summer.

For thousands of years, people have observed this celestial event as a sacred turning point. Ancient cultures tracked the movement of the Sun, built monuments aligned with the solstice sunrise, and gathered in celebration of the light that sustained their crops, communities, and lives.

The Summer Solstice is often viewed as a season of abundance. Gardens are flourishing. Fields are growing. Pollinators move from flower to flower. The natural world is alive with activity, beauty, and vitality.

Yet the solstice also carries a quiet reminder: even at the height of light, change is already underway.

This is one of the great teachings of the season.

The Summer Solstice invites us to celebrate what has come into bloom while honoring the cycles that govern all living things. It is a moment to pause, recognize growth, express gratitude, and receive the gifts of the present moment before the wheel turns once again.

Spiritually, the Summer Solstice is often associated with:

  • Abundance

  • Vitality

Whether you spend the day in ritual, gathering with loved ones, walking in nature, or simply watching the sunset, the Summer Solstice offers an opportunity to connect with the rhythms of the Earth and the light within yourself.

At its heart, the Summer Solstice is a celebration of life in full expression—a reminder to pause, savor, and honor all that has grown.
