MABON

There is an ancient Greek story that has become deeply intertwined with the symbolism of the changing seasons: the story of Demeter and Persephone.

Demeter was the goddess of grain, agriculture, and the fertility of the earth. Persephone was her daughter—a young goddess associated with spring and new growth.

Their story begins in a meadow.

Persephone is gathering flowers when the earth opens beneath her. Hades, ruler of the Underworld, takes her with him, and Persephone disappears from the world above.

Her mother does not know where she has gone.

Demeter searches for her.

She wanders the earth grieving for her daughter, refusing to accept her disappearance. And as Demeter's grief deepens, she withdraws her gifts from the earth.

The crops stop growing.

The fields become barren.

The abundance of the earth begins to disappear.

The world cannot continue without Persephone—and without Demeter's willingness to let the earth flourish.

Eventually, Demeter learns where her daughter is.

She demands that Persephone be returned.

But there is a complication.

While in the Underworld, Persephone has eaten pomegranate seeds. In the mythology, eating the food of the Underworld creates a connection to that realm.

Persephone cannot simply return to the world above and remain there forever.

So a bargain is made.

Persephone will spend part of the year with her mother in the world above, and part of the year in the Underworld.

When Persephone returns, Demeter allows the earth to bloom again.

When Persephone descends, Demeter's grief returns and the earth becomes dormant.

And so the seasons turn.

The Descent

For Mabon, I think the most beautiful part of this story isn't simply that Persephone goes into the Underworld.

It is that she returns changed.

The descent is not necessarily a punishment.

It is a passage.

A crossing.

A movement from one state of being into another.

The bright, abundant world of summer cannot last forever. Eventually, something has to change.

The flowers fade.

The harvest is gathered.

The days shorten.

The earth begins to rest.

And Persephone descends.

The Bargain

But the story also gives us something else to consider: the bargain.

Demeter wants her daughter back completely.

She wants things to return to the way they were.

But Persephone has crossed a threshold.

She has entered another world.

She has experienced something that cannot simply be undone.

The answer is not that Persephone must choose one world forever.

Instead, she belongs to both.

She moves between them.

She becomes part of the cycle.

And perhaps this is one of the deeper teachings we can take from the story.

There are seasons in our own lives when we desperately want something to stay the way it was.

We want the person we love to remain who they were.

We want a relationship, a home, a version of ourselves, a season of life to continue.

But life keeps turning.

Sometimes the only way forward is to allow something to change.

What Does Persephone Ask of Us?

At Mabon, we stand at a threshold.

The harvest is here, but the growing season is ending.

The days are still beautiful, but the darkness is arriving.

We can feel the abundance of what has been while knowing that we cannot hold it forever.

Persephone reminds us that descent is part of the cycle.

There are things we learn in the darkness that we could never learn in the light.

There are seasons when we need to turn inward.

To rest.

To grieve.

To listen.

To become someone new.

And there are also seasons when we return.

When something dormant begins to stir again.

When we emerge carrying what we learned in the dark.
